Slow Food Soap Class, Partnering with Wasteless Solutions, Friday, October 3rd, 6pm
This class is a collaborative effort between Slow Food Utah (a non-profit that Jennifer is honored to sit on the board with), Wasteless Solutions (WasteLess Solutions is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to making a significant reduction in food waste in Utah. Wastelesssolutions.org) and Olio Products (a local natural skin care, beard care and artisan soap company, established in 2013).

Safety: Please wear (or bring) long sleeves and closed toe shoes to work in.

Teach the basics of cold process soap making

Let attendees customize soap with scents, colors, and botanicals

Explain saponification and safety protocols
📝 Workshop Agenda
1. Welcome & Safety Briefing (15 mins)

Hand out gloves, goggles
-
Go over lye safety and workspace rules
2. Intro to Soap Making & Saponification (20 mins)

Brief talk on:

What is saponification? (fat + lye → soap + glycerin)

Basic chemistry behind it
-
Types of oils and their properties
-
Lye handling and measuring
-
3. Demonstration (20 mins)

Facilitator performs the first batch

Show each step from oil blending to trace and pouring
4. Hands-On Soap Making (40 mins)
Participants:

Choose a scent (e.g. lavender, peppermint, citrus, cedarwood)

Pick a color (natural mica powders or clays)
-
Mix oils, add lye solution (pre-measured for safety)

Blend to trace
-
Add color/scent
-
Pour into molds
5. Labeling & Wrap-Up (15 mins)

Label their soap molds with names, scent, and color

Discuss curing time (4–6 weeks)

Take-home info sheets: curing tips, safety, recipes
This class will include all materials and ingredients to make 1.5lbs of CP soap (4 normal size bars) using Olio's Castille Soap Recipe.
You will be leaving class with the soap you created to cure for 30 days and then use or share.
